William T. McGee, MD, MHA, FCCM, FNCS, is a nationally and internationally recognized physician specializing in Critical Care Medicine and care of the hospitalized patient, with four decades of continuous clinical practice in high-acuity hospital and intensive care environments. He is widely regarded as a leading authority on patient safety, shock, sepsis, respiratory failure, vascular access, and complex ICU decision-making, bringing exceptional depth of expertise to both clinical care and medicolegal consultation.

Dr. McGee is a Professor of Medicine, Surgery, and Anesthesiology at the UMass Chan Medical School,  where he has held numerous academic and leadership appointments over the course of his career. He is also an Adjunct Professor of Medicine and Surgery at Tufts University School of Medicine and has trained, mentored, and supervised generations of physicians, fellows, residents, nurses, and multidisciplinary ICU teams.

A graduate of Dartmouth College with a degree in Physics and Chemistry, Dr. McGee earned his Doctor of Medicine from New York Medical College and later completed a Master of Health Administration at Clark University. His postgraduate training includes an Internal Medicine residency at Baystate Medical Center and a Critical Care Fellowship at St. Louis University/St. John’s Mercy Medical Center. He is board-certified in Critical Care Medicine, Neurocritical Care, Hospice and Palliative Medicine, and Internal Medicine.

Dr. McGee has been actively practicing in intensive care units since 1986, managing critically ill medical and surgical patients with conditions including shock, septic shock, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), trauma, postoperative complications, nosocomial infections, and multi-organ failure. His clinical interests focus on functional hemodynamics, physiologic optimization, resuscitation strategies, and the safety of central venous access, areas in which his work has directly improved outcomes for millions of patients worldwide.

An accomplished investigator and scholar, Dr. McGee has authored more than 150 peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, and abstracts, and has served as principal investigator or site investigator for numerous major clinical trials evaluating treatments for severe sepsis, MRSA pneumonia, ARDS, and advanced hemodynamic monitoring. His research on central venous catheter placement has become foundational to modern patient-safety standards for this procedure.
